"Cold Patrol" Out Assisting Homeless

Stream Fox 17 newscasts LIVE starting with TN Mornings at 5 am and News at 9 pm.

NASHVILLE- The Nashville Rescue Mission deployed its "Cold Patrol" team Sunday night looking for any homeless men, women, or children needing a roof over their head. Volunteers are giving people a ride back to the Mission, where they are expecting to be at full capacity Sunday. More than five hundred people are relying on the Mission for shelter. With temperatures dropping so low, people run the risk of hypothermia and frostbite.

"Nobody can exist in -17 degree weather. Not without some type of arctic gear or something like that; so helping these people in back here at the mission is in many cases a life and death thing" said Mike Tatar, with the Rescue Mission.

TDOT crews are out treating the roads with a brine and salt but they do want to warn drivers about being on the roadways during this dangerous weather.  When temperatures drop so low, into single digits, the salt and brine won't melt snow or ice on the roads. Tennessee remains under a state of emergency Sunday  night.
