Tennessee Electric Cooperatives Warn of Scam

Stream Fox 17 newscasts LIVE starting with Fox 17 This Morning at 5 am and News at 9 pm.

NASHVILLE, Tenn.--Tennessee's electric cooperatives are warning residents of a telephone scam targeting utility customers.

Scam artists are calling homes and businesses posing as a co-op or utility employee and threaten to shut off service unless immediate payment is made.

The scammer's caller ID even sometimes displays the name of the utility.

Co-op officials say co-ops do not call members and threaten immediate disconnection. Written notices are usually sent to delinquent accounts before disconnection. Officials ask to call co-ops directly to be sure you are speaking with an official representative.
