EXCLUSIVE: Sudanese Refugee Named Rising Nashville Humanitarian - Eric Alvarez

Stream Fox 17 newscasts LIVE starting with Fox 17 This Morning at 5 am and News at 9 pm.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- While the world celebrated the legacy of Nelson Mandela for Human Rights Day, middle Tennessee state and city leaders also honored one refugee who survived war in his native Sudan and now calls Nashville home.

The Tennessee human rights commission recognized Gatluak Thach as a rising human rights advocate.

Thach is the president of the Nashville International Center for Empowerment, where refugees and immigrants learn to find jobs and apartments, to speak English, even how to use a light switch in their new homes.

Thach says he's honored by the award, but a little surprised.

I wonder why me, Thach said.  I know there's some great people in Nashville, some great people in Tennessee that deserve the award but Im just a little man who's trying to do his best help his own people.

The Center for Empowerment don't just help refugees from the Sudan.  Thach says families from 50 different countries come through their doors.
