Move Over Seattle, Chattanooga Records More Rainfall

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - The Chattanooga area saw rainfall in 2013 that was nearly 16 inches above normal, giving the city twice as much rain as Seattle.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports Chattanooga had gotten 67.4 inches as of Friday. Seattle had a total of just under 33 inches for the same period.

Even though it was a lot of rain, it wasn't the wettest on record for Chattanooga.

Derek Eisentrout, with the National Weather Service's Morristown office, said 2013 in Chattanooga has been the 10th wettest since record-keeping began in 1879. But more rain is predicted before the year's end, so that ranking could change.

The good news is that all the rain gave the Tennessee Valley Authority a record year for cheap hydroelectricity and that brought down electric bills.
