Self-Defense? Maryland Shooting Case Draws National Debate

United States Air Force Tech Sgt. Matthew Pinkerton is facing second-degree murder, manslaughter and use of a firearm felony charges after shooting another man who broke into his home.

The incident took place nearly two months ago, but has sparked national debate in recent days. The state of Maryland is charging Pinkerton under the belief he could have called 911 instead of shooting the intruder, a man who was known to the family.

Kendall Green reportedly had a friendship with Pinkerton's wife while Pinkerton was based overseas in Korea. When his wife tried to end the relationship with Green, he refused to let it go says the family's attorney. Green then reportedly knocked on the door at 2 am one evening demanding to see Pinkerton's wife. He refused to leave despite Pinkerton's request and continued to yell from the front porch of the home. Green then broke the screen door and broke inside the main door to the home.

That's when Pinkerton fired two shots into Green, killing him. The State's Attorney says Pinkerton had time to call 911 and did not have to shoot Green, calling Pinkerton's actions of arming himself "bizarre behavior." Pinkerton's attorney says by the time he would have called 911, his client could have been dead.
