Clarksville Flash Mob Shows Christmas Spirit - John Dunn

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - This weekend marks the beginning of the holiday shopping season, and one church in Clarksville is making sure the meaning of Christmas is not lost on the shoppers.

It was a busy day at Governor's Square Mall in Clarksville. A lot of people were carrying bags, looking for bargains, and hurrying from store to store. Amidst all that busyness, the sounds of carols had a calming effect. "It is just kind of our way of blessing the community," says event coordinator Cristy Thomas.

Members of Grace Church of the Nazarene in Clarksville organized a surprise Christmas flash mob. They dressed in clothes of the nativity and sang songs of the holiday season. For a few minutes shoppers stopped walking by and listened. Some took photos, and others sang along. Most people were happy to hear the familiar carols.

"A lot of times we forget what we're really celebrating, and when you remind people they're happy to be reminded," says Lloyd Russell.

"This is the first thing that should come to mind when you think Christmas, not shopping," says Samantha Broadhurst.

Church members wanted to make sure this Black Friday came with a message. "The biggest thing we wanted to do is just remind people about Christ, and the sacrifice that he made coming here for us, and we wanted to make sure the people had an opportunity to see it in a more tangible way," says Cristy Thomas.

On a frenzied Friday, in the middle of a mall, the Christmas spirit has arrived.

Grace Church of the Nazarene will also host a drive-thru nativity at their church in Clarksville beginning on December 13th through the 15th.
