NASHVILLE- Students across the state are heading back to school with some huge bragging rights.Governor Bill Haslam announced Thursday that Tennessee is the state showing the most significant growth in education. This is all according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress. The NAEP is a standardized reading and math test given every two years to 4th and 8th graders across the country.

Tennessee 4th graders climbed nine spots up the national ranking in math, and did even better in reading--up 10-spots from just two years ago. Nationally, this now puts us in the 30th percentile for both subjects. 8th graders also showed improvement and are up two spots in math and seven in reading.

"We're coming. We have the results to prove it. It's a very proud day to be a 4th and 8th grader--a student period in the state of Tennessee" says Dr. Ryan Jackson, Dean of Students at Maplewood High School.

Tennessee's two year academic progress is the first of its kind in a decade. The latest results make up the largest growth on a single testing cycle that the NAEP has ever seen since it started testing 10-years ago.
