WASHINGTON -- The Food and Drug Administration says it will require the food industry to phase trans fat foods out. That timetable, however, has yet to be determined.

The average American eats around a gram of trans fat a day, according to the FDA. They say that could prevent 20,000 heart attacks and 7,000 deaths each year. Scientists say there are no health benefits to trans fats.

Favorite foods containing lots of trans fats includes items such as popcorn, potato chips, french fries and onion rings, as well as pies, ice cream and beef, according to Heatlh.com. CLICK HERE for more trans fat items.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is taking the credit, saying his city's 2008 ban led to the change.

A 60-day comment period is open by the FDA while additional data is collected.
