NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee's most notorious killer has died but not the way many expected.

Paul Reid passed away at 5:55 PM after spending nearly a week being treated at Metro General Hospital for serious breathing problems.

Reid was sentenced to death for the murders of 7 restaurant workers in Nashville and Clarksville in 1997.

16 year old Sarah Jackson and 25 year old Steve Hampton were Reid's first victims. They were murdered during a robbery at the Captain D's on Lebanon Road in Donelson.

Jackson's father Jerry Jackson tells Fox 17 the news of Reid's death is bittersweet.

"I don't want to sound like I'm glad but I am," said Jackson.  "I feel like it's over now like there is a little closure."

Over the years Reid has had three execution dates scheduled only too see those dates stayed.

Jackson says it will be a relief to not have to attend the execution.

"It would just be a whole lot more stressful," said Jackson.
