Compounding Pharmacy Bill Heads to the President

Washington, DC--A bill that more tightly regulates compounding pharmacies heads to the White House. The senate passed the measure Tuesday evening.

Tainted medicine from a now closed Massachusetts compounding center is blamed for last year's deadly fungal meningitis outbreak. Tennessee Senator Lamar Alexander says this is the time for lawmakers to act.

Alexander says " if we failed to act, the FDA commissioner said, this type of incident will happen again. It is a matter of when not if."

The bill gives the F-D-A more power to regulate compounding pharmacies. Sixty four people, including 16 in Tennessee, died from the fungal meningitis outbreak. Hundreds more became sick after receiving tainted steroid shots for back pain.
