One Day After His Arrest, Greenbrier Mayor Billy Wilson Was Back at Work Today - Meagan O'Halloran

Stream Fox 17 newscasts LIVE starting with Fox 17 This Morning at 5 am and News at 9 pm.

GREENBRIER- The TBI is continuing its investigation of Greenbrier Mayor Billy Wilson. Wilson was back on the job Tuesday, a day after being arrested on charges of stealing  more than $60,000 dollars from the children's charity he started 18-years ago.

Tuesday the state confirmed Mayor Wilson's charity is exempt--meaning the organization makes less than $30,000 a year and not required to file an annual spending report. When someone complained, it led to an investigation which landed the mayor in legal trouble.

He's the man known for saving Christmas. Greenbrier Mayor Billy Wilson has been helping families put gifts under the tree and assisting with bills and other household expenses through his Greenridge Toys for Tots program.

The TBI says Mayor Wilson stole $60,000 from the organization over the last eight years. Wilson is charged with theft and official misconduct. Wilson declined to comment Tuesday. The mayor is staying on the job and getting the support of city staff while the investigation continues.

"He's been a friend, yes, I'll support him" says Greenbrier City Superintendent Tommy Maitland. The TBI is taking a closer look at what happens at Greenbrier City Hall. The city is being audited as part of this investigation.

"We welcome it. Our books are wide open and we welcome an audit" says Maitland. Mayor Wilson is due in court to face official misconduct and theft charges November 15.
