NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- An investigation into a Bordeaux market's alleged dealings with stolen merchandise resulted in a raid on the business.
Fraud Unit detectives began investigating C.J. Discount Market at 3700 Buena Vista Pike in May in response to a citizen's tip. According to police, between May 30 and October 21, staff at the market purchased a total of 195 cartons of cigarettes and 10 quarts of motor oil on 12 separate occasions from an undercover police operative who clearly represented the items as being stolen. Staff at the store paid about half of what the cigarettes and oil were actually worth.
One of the market's operators, 24-year-old Hani F. Alkaifi, is charged with three counts of theft - two felonies and one misdemeanor.  Charges are anticipated against at least one other staff member.
Metro Police seized the entire stock of non-perishable goods yesterday. The non-perishable stock of the store was seized under the premise that it was purchased with the proceeds from the sale of stolen merchandise.
