Money for Food Stamps

Stream Fox 17 newscasts LIVE starting with Fox 17 This Morning at 5 am and News at 9 pm.

Looking ahead, stimulus money added to boost welfare during the financial meltdown of 2008 will expire on November 1st.

The showdown in the U.S. House of Representatives will spill out to soup kitchens across the country.

On November 1st, added stimulus money for food stamps runs dry. That means a family of four getting the maximum benefit of $600 will lose $36 a month. Some Democrats want to extend stimulus money for SNAP.

But the Republican majority in the House sees $39 billion dollars worth of taxpayer bloat, which is how much money the GOP hopes to cut from welfare programs over the next decade.

Critics say there's no bottom line for the food stamp program... which the Congressional Budget Office says grew 135% between 2007 and 2012.

Republicans say that accounts $3.7 trillion for 80 different poverty and welfare programs.

At this hour, the number of people asking for public aid continues to climb.

Fast food giants like McDonald's now even offers its workers advice on how to get food stamps.
