With shootings an obvious problem in major cities natiowide, one police department is launching a new project to fight crime in real time.

The NYPD is installing $1.5 million dollars worth of rooftop sensors across the city to help get officers more details when shots ring out.

For every homicide in New York, there's 100 gunfire incidents according to the department.

These sensors include microphones that will triangulate the location a gun was fired almost instantly, getting officers to the scene as quickly as possible.

Analysts say it'll need to be up and running for some length before it's smart enough to separate noises like fireworks and noisy vehicles.

Some worry what else it will pick up, and what that will mean to their privacy.
