Knoxville, TN

Students at the University of Tennessee clamored to get a glimpse of a massive gorilla being wheeled into UT College of Veterinary Medicine Thursday.

Staff at the Knoxville Zoo think Wanto fractured his femur while climbing bars in the gorilla's indoor courtyard, so they took him to UT to get fixed.

William Oros, a UT Medical Center Doctor who normally treats trauma patients, performed the surgery.

UT Veterinarian Doctor, Ed Ramsey, called Oros for two reason. The first was to ask advice since gorilla anatomy is similar to humans. The second was because he felt comfortable with Oros' skill set being that Oros performed the same surgery on him two years ago.

On a human, the surgery normally takes 1.5 hours, but it took 3.5 hours on Wanto because his positioning presented a challenge.

The good news, the surgery was successful. The Knoxville Zoo says Wanto is already up and moving around.
