STUDY: Self-Perception of Attractiveness Affects Social Status Perception

New research from the Stanford Graduate School of Business in California says people who see themselves as physically attractive also see themselves as belonging to a higher social class


The study, which included both men and women also found those who saw themselves as attractive tended to believe those who were lower down the hierarchy were there because they deserved to be there. In all, attractiveness ranked higher in social rank perception than characteristics like empathy or integrity.

The study also found those who believed they were attractive were less likely to donate to causes. Researchers started the study after findings by the U.S. Census Bureau that Americans were willing to spend more on beauty products than on reading materials.
