3D Breast Reconstruction

Stream Fox 17 newscasts LIVE starting with Fox 17 This Morning at 5 am and News at 9 pm.

Austin, TX--

Happening now in your health news this morning, breast reconstruction after a lumpectomy or double mastectomy is about to change radically.

A company in Austin, Texas modified a common ink-jet printer you could buy at the store and turned it into a 3D printer. But instead of filling cartridges with ink, the lab injected them with biomaterial to print out skin.

Plastic surgeon and Doctor Ned Snyder says it will be a game changer for breast reconstruction.

Trevido Biodevices says it will do clinical trials with the 3D printed breast tissue over the next two years. They say it worked well in mice.

The company says this technology may be in the hands of plastic surgeons in the next three to five years.
