Thanksgiving Shopping Ban

Stream Fox 17 newscasts LIVE starting with Fox 17 This Morning at 5 am and News at 9 pm.

Sparking debate this morning, we have a question sure to get you fired up. Should shopping on thanksgiving day be illegal? It is in three states.

While other parts of the country offer holiday deals starting Thursday, most big stores in Rhode Island, Maine and Massachusetts are banned from opening on the holiday.

It's part of the "blue law", which prohibits large supermarkets, big box  stores and department stars from opening their doors.

Some business groups are working to change the ban. But many shoppers and workers say they're happy with the one-day reprieve, happy to be home with their families to celebrate Thanksgiving.
