Princeton's Meningitis Outbreak

Princeton University will be importing a vaccine that is not yet approved in the U.S. to stop a meningitis outbreak on campus.

Since March, seven cases of meningitis B, a rare and potentially deadly disease, have been linked to the university.

The FDA just approved a request to import Bexsero to treat students and faculty at the New Jersey school. Right now, it is the only vaccine available to protect against meningitis B.

Both Europe and Australia have already approved the vaccine. It has been administered to 8,000 people and the CDC says it is safe.

An infectious disease specialist with Vanderbilt University, William Schaffner, says the vaccine has an effectiveness rate well over 80 percent and it is the key to stopping the outbreak.

Two doses of the vaccine are required for maximum protection. Princeton hopes to make the first dose available in early December and the second dose in February.
