Surrogacy Boom

Stream Fox 17 newscasts LIVE starting with Fox 17 This Morning at 5 am and News at 9 pm.

New in your health news this morning, critics say surrogacy clinics booming in one part of India are exploiting women.

Business is booming thanks to the low cost of the procedure, availability of surrogates and skilled doctors.

One doctor says she's delivered 700 surrogate babies in the last 10 years, two-thirds to couples from other countries.

But critics call surrogacy clinics baby-making factories.

One woman who delivered a baby for a foreign couple two weeks ago, says she's never felt exploited.

She says she became a surrogate because she wanted to buy a house.

At this hour, India has banned same-sex couples and singles from surrogacy.

It's also proposing that surrogate mothers be between the ages of 21 and 35.

New laws could also tighten VISA controls.
