Carter House Plantation

November thirtieth is the anniversary of one of the most important battles of the civil war.

As the 1864 Battle of Franklin raged around a local farmhouse, little did the family inside know their own son was fighting for his life only a few hundred yards away.

Fox 17's Miranda Cohen takes us to Williamson county to visit the historic carter house as we go Travelin' Tennessee.

The Carter House, built in 1830, was once the centerpiece of a two hundred-eight acre farm and the home place of the prominent Carter family.

Both union and confederate soldiers met here in a fiery battle.

During the fight, carter family members hid in the basement Unaware their own brother and son, Captain Throderic Todd Carter was among those in the battle.

The 24-year old captin had fought in numerous battles and even escaped from a northern prison train.

Late in the afternoon, the smoke cleared and for the first time, he realized he was fighting on his family's farm and by then, he'd been mortally wounded.

Thousands of soldiers died that day and the Carter House and property was turned into a hospital and a funeral parlor.
