Nashville Toffee Company

Most of us are digging out our cherished family recipes this time of year.

But a local family turned one of their favorite holiday memories into a booming business.

Friends may have thought George Cohn was nuts when he left the banking business to be a candy man.

But he is now savoring the sweet smell of success and chocolate!

Fox 17's miranda cohen takes us behind the scenes of the Nashville Toffee Company.

It is long way from the stovetop of a Nashville kitchen to a high tech operation to make toffee.

Nashville Toffee owner George Cohn: "My wife had this crazy idea she wanted to make candy on the stovetop in the house just for fun and she gave it to friends and family and they loved it."

When Christina and George Cohn started mixing chocolate, carmel and nuts in their home in 2002 they didn't realize they had a recipe for success:

Nashville Toffee owner George Cohn: "It reminded me of the candy my grandmother used to send me dark chocolate toffee and I just loved it."

The cohn's decided to sell their masterpiece to the masses and the nashville toffee company was born.

It's now turning out a thousand pounds of sweets a week and that means they need more space.

Nashville Toffee owner George Cohn: "When it got to a certain point we needed a bigger kettle, when we got to a point where the kettle wasn't sufficient enough to meet the demand we got another kettle and now we will soon be in a larger building with more equipment."

George Cohn left his job in banking and is now counting nuts and chocolate melts.

Nashville Toffee owner George Cohn: "There were many nights when I'd be up until two in the morning and I was doing more candy business than banking so eventually it was obvious what I needed to do."

Miranda Cohen / FOX 17 News: "Lots of folks say diamonds are a girls best friend but a lot of us think chocolate is a pretty close runner up and George and Christina say they only use the very finest products for their candy."

Nashville Toffee owner George Cohn: "The flagship is this dark chocolate and milk chocolate almond toffees, made with all natural ingredients and seventy two percent cocoa. We also make barks of white chocolate, milk chocolate, dark chocolate and sugar free dark chocolate with cashews, peanuts and almonds."

From her grandmother's homemade recipe to the sweet secret of a thriving commercial business, the Cohn's hope to continue keep stirring up success..

Nashville Toffee owner George Cohn: "This thing has a life of it's own and I plan on continuing to grow it. I love doing it and love making it."
