He won't win many high speed pursuits but Sergeant Keith Youmans believes his mountain bike brings something more important than speed.
"Interaction is great, just today I've probably had half a dozen citizens approach me, how you doing, good to see you out in neighborhood, appreciate what you do, that's something you don't get in a car," said Sgt. Youmans.
Bicycle officers like Youmans have become a more common site in Mt. Juliet this year.
Chief Andy Garrett says high gas prices convinced him to beef up the bicycle patrol last year.
On Wednesday, 5 officers spend most of their day on two wheels, riding in shopping centers and neighborhoods.
Garrett believes they're even playing a big role in cutting crime by 10%, including a 54% drop in theft from vehicle crimes.
"We can go anywhere crime goes," said Chief Garrett.
"Let's say we have vechicle breakins in a neighborhood, they're spotty. I'll put them there. They're high visibility they can go where cars can't."Bicycle Officers Helping With Crime-Sky Arnold
