WBFF Fox 45 :: Rough Time of Year for Sumner County Food Bank
The Sumner County Food Bank in Gallatin all but dries up in donations this time of year, and this year is no exception.
And worse, more than 1,000 residents are in danger of going without enough food over the next few months.
It has been a tough period for the food bank. The number of residents in need of food has increased by about 13 percent with donations down by 80 percent, said James Gill, pastor of Liberty Baptist Church and director of the organization.
Aside from food, the organization also needs monetary donations to purchase items from the Second Harvest Food Bank in Nashville. Gill said there are several food items, such as peanut butter, jelly, tuna, pasta and sauce, pancake mix and syrup, that have become too expensive to purchase, even at Second Harvest.
The Sumner County Food Bank gives food boxes to around 1,200 residents each year. Their food giveaway is on the third Tuesday of every month.Rough Time of Year for Sumner County Food Bank

Houston brother will be his own attorney in court
June 18, 2013 13:02 GMT

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A Roane County man will face federal gun violation charges next month without an attorney.

The Knoxville News Sentinel (http://bit.ly/17VlXpM ) reported Rocky Joe Houston will represent himself on a charge of possession of a gun by a felon.

The charge came after Houston earlier represented himself in state court on charges stemming from a police chase. He was convicted of evading arrest and reckless endangerment.

Houston and his brother, Leon Houston, were tried, but not convicted, in the 2006 shooting deaths of a Roane County deputy and his ride-along companion.

In federal court, Rocky Joe Houston is claiming the officer who charged him with the felony had no legal authority.
