WBFF Fox 45 :: Crooks Preying on those who are Praying
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Metro Police are trying to find out who's behind a rash of car burglaries in church parking lots in West Nashville. Police say the thieves are breaking windows or simply opening car doors during Sunday services while people are attending service. They're taking whatever is visible like money, electronics, even medicine. It's possible people have a false sense of security with their cars parked at church, but police say crooks see it as an easy target.

"You have a large amount of cars in a small area at one time," says Commander Marlene Pardue. "It's not like having to go down a street. You have a compacted target right there, so it's an easy thing to hit."

Commander Pardue says some churches have surveillance, but most don't. She has increased patrols in the area and has printed out flyers to all the churches to be on the lookout.

2 appellate court judges are stepping down
May 24, 2013 21:29 GMT

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Two Tennessee appellate court judges have notified Gov. Bill Haslam that they will not run for another term on the bench in the August 2014 retention election.

Patricia J. Cottrell, a judge on the Court of Appeals, and Joseph M. Tipton, who sits on the Court of Criminal Appeals bench, will both leave after September of next year.

The announcements come after the state legislature left Tennessee without a way to replace judges who step down or die when a commission expires at the end of next month.

Members of the soon-to-be-defunct Judicial Nominating Commission will make recommendations for replacements to give to Haslam before the panel expires. Haslam will appoint the replacements from those recommendations.
