WBFF Fox 45 :: FOX17's Erika Lathon Monitoring Conditions just West of the City
Some area schools are closed. Communities across the Midstate are keeping a close eye on weather conditions as temperatures hover around the 30 degree mark. We are seeing some ice, but the good news: None of that ice is forming on the roadways tonight. We are seeing ice just about everywhere else. Officials are hoping conditions don't deteriorate overnight. As temperatures dropped, the light rain falling across Dickson turned into a light sheet of ice on signs and trees, but roadways remained clear. On the way home, some residents made a last minute stop at Dollar General to stock up.

"I bought this lantern," says resident Mary Cardenas. "It's LED lights, D batteries, one oil, never know - backup. I bought some candles too."

Preparations were also being made at the county's Office of Emergency Management.

"We gave all our generators for our emergency purposes we try to make sure are up and running in our communications, it's up and running the best that we can," says EMA Director Donny Bear.

The winter weather is a big switch from temperatures near 70 just a week ago.

"It's crazy," says Rebecca Johnson. "It's freezing. One minute it's pretty, the next it's ugly."

Officials are just hoping the winter mix doesn't stick around too long to cause too many problems.

"Power outages is the big thing with the ice and everything," says Bear. "That's what concerns us the most, especially people on home medical stuff."

Lots of ice on trees and signs, anything stationary, but we're seeing some of that ice beginning to melt form just a few hours ago. Dickson County Emergency Management will be keeping a close eye on things there overnight.

Miss. chooses new firm to run Woodville prison
May 18, 2013 20:50 GMT

WOODVILLE, Miss. (AP) -- Mississippi officials have picked a new company to run the Wilkinson County Correctional Facility.

Utah-based Management and Training Corp. announced Friday that the Mississippi Department of Corrections has chosen it to run the 1,000-bed prison starting July 1, the Natchez Democrat reports (http://bit.ly/10MvOGv).

Corrections Corporation of America, based in Nashville, Tenn., had run the prison since 1998. MTC says it will keep "the vast majority" of employees.

MTC will get a five-year contract to run the prison with two one-year options. Last year, officials chose MTC to take over East Mississippi Correctional Facility, the Walnut Grove Correctional Facility and the Marshall County Correctional Facility from the GEO Group. MTC won 10-year contracts for each.

CCA still runs the Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility and the Adams County Correctional Center in Mississippi.
