WBFF Fox 45 :: Sandy Hook Students are Back in Class
(FOX NEWS' ANNA KOOIMAN) Students were put in a new building a few miles away from the site of the December 14 massacre. While children were back in the classroom, Connecticut leaders took up measures to prevent another tragedy like this one. School buses picking up kids from Sandy Hook Elementary all over Newtown, taking them to their new school in nearby Monroe, Connecticut. The students attending class for the first time since the traumatic school shooting that left 20 children dead. Residents of Monroe lining the roads leading to the school with welcome signs. Although news cameras were kept away from campus, local police describe the scene as students arrived.

"The kids all got off the bus, a lot of them were happy to see their friends they hadn't seen in a while, they're excited about the new school," says Monroe Police Dept. Lt. Keith White.

Police say parents were allowed to stay on campus for a while with their kids, and school officials held an assembly to answer any questions they might have. Law enforcement are maintaining a presence at the school, but officials say they are careful to maintain a balanced approach.

"We don't want them to think this is a police state, we want them to know that this is a school and a school first," says Lt. White. "It's a place for them to come learn, enjoy their friends, and grow up."

Meanwhile, Connecticut's Governor announcing the first steps in response to the shooting rampage, with the creation of the Sandy Hook Advisory Commission.

"The commission will look for ways to make sure that our gun laws are as tight as they need to be," says Governor Daniel Malloy. "That our mental health system can reach those who are in need of our help and that our law enforcement agencies have the tools that they need to protect public safety, particularly in our schools."

The Governor is expected to receive the initial report from the Commission by March 15, in time for the General Assembly to take action during the next session.
