WBFF Fox 45 :: Last Day for Lawmakers to do Something Before Sending U.S. Over Fiscal Cliff
As the country approaches the end of the year, a deadline is just hours away. If nothing is done by lawmakers, tax hikes and spending cuts would go into effect at the first of the year, potentially hurting your pocketbook and damaging the economy nationwide. Tennessee lawmakers say most agree that taxes should not be raised for most Americans. They say there are bigger issues that need to be resolved, such as reform spending on entitlement programs like welfare.

"It would be a tragedy if when they get to that day, they become eligible, but there's not enough money to pay the bills," says Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.).

"It's really been almost 15 years since we've had a budget and passed all of our appropriations bills on time," says Congressman Jim Cooper (D-Tenn.). "That's outrageous."

A deal could be reached at any moment. Get the latest updates on the negotiations at Fox17.com or Facebook.com/FoxNashville. We'll also have continuing coverage TONIGHT on FOX17 NEWS at 9pm.Last Day for Lawmakers to do Something Before Sending U.S. Over Fiscal Cliff

Miss. chooses new firm to run Woodville prison
May 18, 2013 20:50 GMT

WOODVILLE, Miss. (AP) -- Mississippi officials have picked a new company to run the Wilkinson County Correctional Facility.

Utah-based Management and Training Corp. announced Friday that the Mississippi Department of Corrections has chosen it to run the 1,000-bed prison starting July 1, the Natchez Democrat reports (http://bit.ly/10MvOGv).

Corrections Corporation of America, based in Nashville, Tenn., had run the prison since 1998. MTC says it will keep "the vast majority" of employees.

MTC will get a five-year contract to run the prison with two one-year options. Last year, officials chose MTC to take over East Mississippi Correctional Facility, the Walnut Grove Correctional Facility and the Marshall County Correctional Facility from the GEO Group. MTC won 10-year contracts for each.

CCA still runs the Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility and the Adams County Correctional Center in Mississippi.
