According to the National Weather Service, a strong low pressure system has formed over Texas and will soon begin heading toward middle Tennessee today. Rain ahead of the system will move into the area this afternoon. Rainfall will increase this evening as the low approaches the area.
Locally heavy rainfall is possible with this system. We expect one to two inches with this system for late this afternoon and tonight. Highest amounts will be over the southeast half of the area.
This system may also generate isolated severe thunderstorms over the areas south of I-40 tonight.
The greatest threat from severe storms will be damaging winds and isolated tornadoes.
The intensity of the low pressure system will generate strong winds over the area. Expect winds in the morning at 10 - 20 mph. Higher gusts are possible. Afternoon winds could increase to15 - 25 mph. Gusts to 35 mph are possible.
Much colder air will pour into the region and slowly change the precipitation from rain to snow.
The low is expected to pull out of the area in the afternoon on Wednesday. This should limit the amount of snowfall to around one inch or less.
Parts of southwestern Kentucky are under a blizzard warning.
Watch FOX 17 News Meteorologists Chris Justus, Barak Shapiro and Craig Edwards over the next two days and they will bring you the latest as the system moves through.

2 appellate court judges are stepping down
May 24, 2013 21:29 GMT
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Two Tennessee appellate court judges have notified Gov. Bill Haslam that they will not run for another term on the bench in the August 2014 retention election.
Patricia J. Cottrell, a judge on the Court of Appeals, and Joseph M. Tipton, who sits on the Court of Criminal Appeals bench, will both leave after September of next year.
The announcements come after the state legislature left Tennessee without a way to replace judges who step down or die when a commission expires at the end of next month.
Members of the soon-to-be-defunct Judicial Nominating Commission will make recommendations for replacements to give to Haslam before the panel expires. Haslam will appoint the replacements from those recommendations.
