Members of both the Manchester Police Department and the Coffee County
Sheriff's Department are taking training, along with teachers and
education officials. Assistant Police Chief Adam Floied says there's a
different role for both groups. He says teachers are taught how to get
children to safety and create more time for officers to respond. Members
of law enforcement are trained how to go right at the trouble.
"They
have to learn how to bypass wounded people, children and teachers and
go directly where the violence is to stop it from escalating," says
Assistant Chief Floied.
Floied says that training is different
from the way officers used to handle threats. He says before the
Columbine shooting, officers would create a parameter and wait for SWAT
teams.

Houston brother will be his own attorney in court

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A Roane County man will face federal gun violation charges next month without an attorney.
The Knoxville News Sentinel (http://bit.ly/17VlXpM ) reported Rocky Joe Houston will represent himself on a charge of possession of a gun by a felon.
The charge came after Houston earlier represented himself in state court on charges stemming from a police chase. He was convicted of evading arrest and reckless endangerment.
Houston and his brother, Leon Houston, were tried, but not convicted, in the 2006 shooting deaths of a Roane County deputy and his ride-along companion.
In federal court, Rocky Joe Houston is claiming the officer who charged him with the felony had no legal authority.
