WBFF Fox 45 :: Meningitis Voted Biggest Tennessee Story of 2012
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- The deadly outbreak of fungal meningitis that has killed 39 people, including 14 in Tennessee, was voted the state's top story of 2012.
Patients contracted the rare disease when they were given contaminated steroid injections. The outbreak was first identified by doctors in Tennessee and could have been much worse if they had not acted quickly.
Famed University of Tennessee women's basketball coach Pat Summitt's retirement was the second biggest story of the year.
Other stories in the top five were the Legislature's Republican supermajority; election changes that include redistricting and voter photo identification; and the reelection of U.S. Rep. Scott DesJarlais, despite revelations he had an affair with a patient and urged her to get an abortion.
Voting was by The Associated Press staff, member newspapers and broadcast subscribers.Meningitis Voted Biggest Tennessee Story of 2012

2 appellate court judges are stepping down
May 24, 2013 21:29 GMT

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Two Tennessee appellate court judges have notified Gov. Bill Haslam that they will not run for another term on the bench in the August 2014 retention election.

Patricia J. Cottrell, a judge on the Court of Appeals, and Joseph M. Tipton, who sits on the Court of Criminal Appeals bench, will both leave after September of next year.

The announcements come after the state legislature left Tennessee without a way to replace judges who step down or die when a commission expires at the end of next month.

Members of the soon-to-be-defunct Judicial Nominating Commission will make recommendations for replacements to give to Haslam before the panel expires. Haslam will appoint the replacements from those recommendations.
