WBFF Fox 45 :: SAVING YOU MONEY: Buying A Whole Cow
BUYING A WHOLE COW

Leiper's Fork
Stacy Case

In Saving You Money tonight, Meat is usually the costliest item on your grocery list.  However, there's a new trend in buying meat that can save you a lot of ....    shall we say 'MOO la.'
Sure, a good steak is nice now and then,  but ever thought about buying a whole cow?  People like Cindy Corn buy like this and split it with a family member.  Corn says, "If you want skirt steak or round steak or roast or how much ground beef  and of course if you want the inside things like the brain and the tongues which we decline."

Though the idea is new to some,  Corn's been buying beef this way on and off for 40 years.

Leeann Cherry who owns Bear Creek Farm near Leiper's Fork explains, "We call it cowpooling and it's very popular.  What we do is we have a sheet at farmers market and people call us if they're interested in half or a quarter."

At Bear Creek Farm, they'll pair you with others who too want to cowpool.   At $3.50 a pound--- a flat rate whether your cut is steak or hamburger meat  ---- it's economical.

Cherry says, "If you buy beef at one of the major grocery stores then you probably can quickly realize that  $3.50 a pound is quite a bit cheaper."

Next question?  How long will it stay good in the freezer?

Cherry answers, "This will last a year in your freezer and there's nothing added when the meat is put in the vaccum bag.  It's just sealed."

People choose this option to save money, but also because the cows at Bear Creek Farms are grain fed with no hormones or antibiotics added.

Corn says, "Their steaks are so good that I will not order a steak anywhere anymore. I don't order beef anywhere in the restaurants when we go out.  They're so good.

Pork is also sold this way... by the pig.

Cherry finishes, "I'm just amazed at just the cost of food so this is a good way if you can get 4-5 families to go in and share a steer you're going to save."
