WBFF Fox 45 :: EXCLUSIVE UPDATE: Bedford Co. Authorities Uncover Large Cockfighting Operation
An update on a story you saw ONLY ON FOX last night. Bedford County authorities uncover one of the largest cockfighting operations in county history. Some say it won't even put a dent in cockfighting here in Tennessee. 2 deputies uncovered a cock fight with over 100 spectators December 2, but out of all the people there, only on e person has been charged. Some say current Tennessee laws are so lenient, that Tennessee will continue to be a magnet for the crime until those laws are changed. Our EXCLUSIVE video shows Bedford County Sheriff's Deputies as they came across the cock fight. Humane Society spokesperson Leighann McCollum says Tennessee is one of only 10 states that punishes cockfighting as a misdemeanor instead of a felony. Even within the Tennessee Code itself, cockfighting is seen as less of a crime. It clearly reads that animal fighting is a Class E felony "except for any offense involving a cock, which is a Class A Misdemeanor". Being a spectator at a cock fight is a Class C Misdemeanor, which carries a $50 fine. McCollum says that's not enough to scare people away from the fights, especially if they stand to win hundreds of dollars betting on which rooster lives, and which one dies. Some in the State Assembly have tried to change the laws. The latest was a Senate Bill which was defeated in 2011. The Humane Society representative says not only do cock fights move from county to county, they also draw fighters and spectators from across the Southeast, that are looking for a way around stronger laws in their states. FOX17's Eric Alvarez will have more on this story TONIGHT on FOX17 NEWS.EXCLUSIVE UPDATE: Bedford Co. Authorities Uncover Large Cockfighting Operation

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) -- Washington County authorities say a man faked a marriage certificate so he could visit a woman held in the Johnson City Detention Facility.

The Johnson City Press (http://bit.ly/14QBr9L ) reports investigators discovered the ruse after the May 14 visit by 32-year-old Robert S. Hicks of Elizabethton. Hicks was arrested Tuesday on a charge of criminal simulation. He was jailed at the Washington County Detention Center in lieu of $10,000 bond, pending a court appearance Wednesday.
