WBFF Fox 45 :: Shoppers Prepare for Small Business Saturday - John Dunn
November 23, 2012

It has been a day of busy malls, packed stores, and big savings.

Black Friday is all about shopping, but small business owners hope you won't forget about them.

They're ready to sell as Black Friday turns into Small Business Saturday.

It's one of the busiest shopping days of the year, and while most customers are focused on the major chains, plenty of other businesses are hoping to grab your attention.

"We hope to see you this weekend," says Susan Tinney.

Susan Tinney owns the Tinney Contemporary art gallery on 5th Avenue North.

Although they're usually closed on weekends, they're opening Saturday afternoon as part of Small Business Saturday.

"We just hope that people will consider small businesses when they're doing their holiday shopping," says Tinney.

Small Business Saturday began three years ago as a way of driving after Thanksgiving sales to the mom and pop stores around the country.

"I think it's fantastic," says shopper Carol Sykes.

We spoke to several people downtown who say shopping at local retailers has its advantages.

"The small businesses, they're a little more comfortable to go to, and it really supports the community," says shopper Brad Powers.

"You know the small businesses, the business owner, needs some help from the community, from the country," says Sykes.

"I'm all for small business in Nashville, these are the real people that worked hard for a long time," says another shopper.

American Express has a special promotion Saturday.

If you register your American Express card and spend at least $25 at a qualifying store, you'll get $25 cash back.

The Tinney Contemporary gallery is one of those merchants, and Susan Tinney will be waiting to show you inside.

"A lot of us have decided to open on the weekends, and especially this holiday weekend," says Tinney.

According to the Small Business Administration there are more than 27 million small businesses in the United States.

Tenn. Powerball ticket worth $1 million
May 19, 2013 18:44 GMT

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A Powerball ticket sold in Tennessee barely missed winning a share of an estimated $590.5 million prize. But the ticket has a nice consolation prize worth $1 million.

Officials say the Powerball ticket worth $1 million was sold in Chattanooga.

There's no word yet on who won.

A Powerball ticket sold at a supermarket in Zephyrhills, Fla., matched all six numbers selected Saturday night for the estimated $590.5 million prize. It's the highest Powerball jackpot in history.

The winning numbers were 10, 13, 14, 22 and 52, with a Powerball of 11.
