It all happened this morning during a big partnership announcement
between a local salon and Vanderbilt Children's Hospital.
Fox 17
Entertainment Reporter Stacy McCloud has more on how this local business
is helping heal patients from the outside - in.
The angelic voice of 18 year old Katie Roy gathered quite the crowd outside William Edge Salon and Spa Friday morning.
Katie's performing to kick off a partnership between the salon and
Vanderbilt Children's Hospital, where she's been a patient for over a
decade.
"You don't feel like you are at a hospital, feels like family" says Katie.
The salons owner wanted to stand by his philosophy of serving from the
heart, so he decided to do something no one has ever done before and
offer select patients, their caregivers and staff at children's hospital
services for free.
"I think when you can make meaning of what
you do and a purpose about what you do, you give people a purpose and
your customers and team get involved in something bigger. The last thing
the world needs is just another hair salon" says salon owner William
Edge.
Katie and her mom were the first to receive this labor of love.
"It's made me feel special. I am thankful. They didn't have to do any of this at all" says Katie.
At the age of three Katie was diagnosed with a rare metabolic disorder.
She also has a big sister who's been a patient of children's for 24 years.
So mom Jenni understand what it's like to need a moment away from it all.
"Your
family is interrupted, your life is gone and your world stops. So to
have an outlet, a way to relieve yourself from those thongs, even an
hour, is key" says Katie's mom Jenni Cloete.
In addition to the
services William Edge provides for patients and caregivers, every time
you visit the salon or spa one dollar of every service will go to "Every
service serves a child". But they want to go one step further
challenging salons across the nation to jump on board. "We are gonna
guilt them into playing with us and get them going" says William Edge.
It's a partnership that will not only give patients like Katie the
confidence to do the things they love, but dollars that will that will
allow Vanderbilt to continue to provide services that are a cut above
the rest.
"To overcome it and live the quality of life today and only because
of doctors at Children's, I cant even describe the words" says Cloete.
Katie
was also surprised by the Nashville Rock band "The Hollywood Kills",
with a "Rock Certificate". They plan on taking Katie into the studio and
producing her first demo!
