"We put extra staff on just to watch that situation, but also to monitor other states, especially on the East Coast, because we might be called upon to send responders to help them," says TEMA's Jeremy Heidt.
You don't have to be an emergency responder to be prepared.
"What we recommend is that everybody have at least 3 days worth of food in the home," says Heidt. "That gives a nice cushion with ability to survive when something prevents you from leaving your house."
This year TEMA launched READYTN, an app for the iPhone and Android devices.
"In the planning section, disaster check lists to go through and make checks," says Heidt.
The app lists emergency contacts for Tennessee counties, and what you need to build emergency kits for your home or vehicle, depending on the weather event or disaster you're preparing for.
"If you drive around in winter, you should have a winter weather kit in your car with warm clothing, signaling devices, cell phone charged, at least half a tank of gas," says Heidt. "You need to have food, water, medications. Keep things simple to prepare or meals ready to eat or instant package open without any cooking."
This time it's our neighbors to the Northeast being pounded by torrential rain and damaging winds, but in Middle Tennessee, floods, tornadoes and severe storms are just a few reasons to take inventory of the emergency plan for your family. Couple's bodies found in their Blount County home
May 20, 2013 20:14 GMT
LOUISVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- The Blount (blunt) County sheriff's office says preliminary results of autopsies on the bodies of a couple found dead in their home in Louisville (LEW'-ihs-vil) show their deaths are consistent with murder-suicide.
Marian O'Briant said in an email that it appears 54-year-old Steven Adkins shot 53-year-old Rebecca Adkins, then shot himself.
O'Briant said a family member found the bodies Sunday night. It wasn't clear how long they had been dead.
