Charter Amendment Off The Ballot - Sky Arnold
An English language petition thousands of Nashville voters signed is off the November ballot at least for now.
Metro's Election Commission made that decision by a 3 to 2 vote Tuesday on the advice of Nashville's legal department. The city's attorney says the November 4th election is 3 days shy of the 2 years city laws require to hold new Charter Amendment votes.
"If the referendum procedure is done according to Metro Charter this will go on the ballot eventually but they upheld the law today and I'm pleased about that," said Gregg Ramos, an opponent of the amendment.
Supporters, including Metro Council Member Eric Crafton say the decision was wrong because it's been more than two years since the last petition was filed.
"Clearly a large number of people, over 12-thousand said they wanted to have this measure on the ballot and they wanted to vote on it. Now their money is being used to keep them from having a voice," said Crafton.
Supporters are planning to appeal the decision in court.
