COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Jalen Hurd broke the freshly minted TSSAA single-season rushing record just six hours after it was set by accumulating 394 yards and seven touchdowns -- both championship records -- on 34 carries to lead Beech to a 56-35 victory over Columbia Central Friday night in the Class 5A championship game.
The record was originally broken earlier Friday by Huntingdon quarterback Jacob Warbritton, who rushed for 163 yards to finish with 3,082 for the year as his team lost the Class 1A game.
Hurd only needed 119 to break the new mark, and had 133 and three touchdowns in the first half alone. Hurd ended his season with 3,357 rushing yards as Beech (15-0) won its second state title.
Matthew Markham led the Lions (12-3) with 356 yards and two touchdowns on 24-of-33 passing.
Beech's Kourtney Hawkins was named the game's defensive MVP with 10 tackles and an interception.
