It's been almost twenty years since James House wrote the song "Broken
Wing", but he remembers the writing session like it was yesterday.
"We took our time writing this song. We knew every line was important" says House.
House
and two other Nashville writers had no idea what they were going to
write about. So, like he usually does, House went in a little early to
come up with a melody they could work with.
"Sometimes it will
come from a lyric or title but most the time the inspiration is from the
music first. The music just started pouring out of me. I wrote the
track, had the drums, bass and guitars" says House.
The other writers arrived - one with the title. From there the song took off.
"It
actually started with the chorus, broken wing she still sings - Phil
that poured out of him and said this is good" says House.
One big reason the song was so easy to write is because house could relate.
"Started
singing with the melody and someone, a friend of ours, had gone through
it so at the same time it all came together" says House.
The song only took about 4 hours to finish - but half of the session was spent debating one key element.
"There
was discussion while we were writing - does the girl die in the song -
because at some point it does become a song and you have to write to the
song. Inspiration is inspiration" says House.
The song was
originally written for House - but while out on the road he got a
call that it was sparking interest from some pretty big female country
stars.
"I'd heard Faith Hill had it on hold for a little bit - that was the rumor. That was before facebook and twitter" laughs House.
By the time he returned home, Martina McBride had cut the song.
"I sat in the parking lot somewhere on 16th avenue, don't even remember where and listened to it 20 times" says House
"Broken
Wing" gave house his 3rd career number one and just last year the song
surpassed the 2 million airplay mark. But the impact of the song goes
much deeper than career milestones.
"It has just been one of
those songs over the years that I play it live and people come up and
say it's been an important part of their lives" says House.
House says as a songwriter you write a lot and just hope for the best -
while he's gone on to write several top 20 hits since broken wing - he
says the place McBride took this song will always be a career high.
"We wrote it - but she owns it" says House.
