NASHVILLE, Tenn -- Steven Curtis Chapman has one of the most well known names in Christian music. He's won 57 dove awards, achieved 47 number one hits and has five grammy awards. But his most recent album features a genre he's never recorded before. "When Cracker Barrel contacted me and asked me to do a hymn record in bluegrass style, I was like what part of that is not a huge yes," says Chapman.
The bluegrass album, appropriately titled "Deep Roots" is available only at the old country store. It's is full of old hymns he remembers singing growing up, as well as re-worked hits of his own! "I grew up in Kentucky and the first music U heard was my dad and his buddies playing bluegreass." says Chapman.
Chapman even picks up the banjo on a song or two and collaborates with bluegrass great Ricky Skaggs. His dad, brother, son and daughter in law also show up on some of the tracks. One of which was influenced by his son years ago! " I wrote song on that flight, not knowing years later I would re record it and my son would sing it with me." says Chapman.
Cracker Barrels only request was that Chapmans song "Cinderella" be included. Very special, since the song is about his daughters, one of which has passed away since he last recorded it.
" haven't recorded it since Maria died. I thought about it, what would be appropriate so it was like, this is the one. The last line used to say, the clock will strike midnight and she will be gone and now it says but I know the truth is the dance will go on." says Chapman.
12 tracks that Chapman says are both a blessing and dream come true.
"It's like a comfy bed! You lay down and it's like, oh this is right."
