While bigger grocery
chains have felt the squeeze of a tight economy, discount grocers have
capitalized on it... by opening new stores at a record pace and
promising savings of 40 to 60 percent.
The first thing you notice when you enter a 'discount' grocer is a smaller store and selection.

We don't offer as big a variety. You come in and we have one type of ketchup rather than 3 or 4. That's a good cost cutter.
That keeps stock and overhead under control and prices low for shoppers like Sabrina Evans.

Good prices because I'm looking for good prices.
Some of the bigger names in this niche market are Save A Lot, Aldi, and Dollar General Market.
Sabrina Evans / Shopper I'm a caterer. It's very important that I find the best price and quality for my business.
Evans
notices these stores aren't as fancy as traditional grocery stores, but
it's another cost cutting strategy. Aldi for example doesn't have much
shelving. As you see, the store uses a lot of stacked boxes.
And the stores have just a few employees which also keeps prices low.
Stacy
Case: For example.. there's no reason to hire someone to collect these
carts in the parking lot because it costs a quarter to use it....
and when you bring it back...
you get it back.
Fewer workers also means customers carry out their own groceries.

going to pay $3.99 at any bigger retail store you're going to pay up to
$7.99
Fox 17 also did some cost comparison on eggs. Here they're 88 cents a dozen. $2.00 elsewhere.
Vine ripened tomatoes... 88 cents a pound in discount grocers. $1.49 a pound at the big chains.
A roast $3.99 a pound at one leading grocer. 88 cents a pound here.
Sabrina
Evans says: I just left a store and it was like $17 for this...
pretty much the same size... for $17. This is $9.90. That's pretty
good.
