WBFF Fox 45 :: Legal Fees
If you've ever needed an attorney, you know how legal fees can quickly add up. FOX17's Stacy Case is saving you money with ways to keep your court costs down. Ben Papa is one of dozens of private practice attorneys in the Midstate who do some legal work for free. It's called pro bono in legal circles, and it's all coordinated through the Legal Aid Society. Papa primarily helps people going through divorce who can't afford all of thelegal expenses associated with the process, but attorneys who volunteer their time with the Legal Aid Society have expertise in all areas of the law.

"When someone is trapped in a marriage, particularly an abusive marriage, and they don't have the funds to get out of it, or they don't know what to do to represent themselves through the process, it makes me feel like I'm using all of this school I've done to help people to be a resource for folks in the community, which is an important thing I think," says Papa.

Pro bono clients are filtered through the Legal Aid Society where they have to qualify based on income, expenses and other circumstances. If you need legal help, you can call Legal Aid at 244.6610. Attorneys partnering with Legal Aid worked on 2500 cases last year - free time valued at $1.5 million. The Legal Aid Society also holds monthly walk-in clinics where anyone can get help without having to qualify. Free legal clinics are the 2nd Tuesday of each month at the Legal Aid offices from 5:15-7pm, and the 4th Saturday from 9:30am-Noon, again on the 3rd Friday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church from 2-5pm, and finally the first Tuesday of the month at the Williamson County library from 5:30-7pm.Legal Fees
