Saving You Money
it's highly publicized Playbook for sale today. The 7" tablet PC has
gotten some good reviews for it being user-friendly, but it's gotten
criticism as well - mostly for its lack of software. More apps are
expected to come this summer. The Playbook has a price tag starting at
$499. That's the same price Apple is charging for the Ipad 2, but the
first generation Ipad is still a hot seller, especially on sites like
Craigslist and Ebay. Tonight, FOX17's Stacy Case is saving you money
with what to look for so you don't get gauged.
"I have my Bible program here," says Rob Taylor.
His congregation calls him "Pastor Gadget".
"Right now I have 3, but one's my wife's," says Taylor.
Taylor is talking about his Ipads. He's owned 7 of them in the span of 2 years.
"This is Wednesday's sermon," says Taylor.
Taylor has sold a couple of the first generation Ipads on Craigslist.
"I made $80 on one and $50 on the other," says Taylor.
Some sellers are gauging potential buyers, according to Patrick Kabir, who owns technology consulting company Infertile Machines.
"I saw one this morning for $700 on Craigslist," says Kabir. "They're
taking advantage of the fact that people want something that's such a
hot selling device."
It's an issue of supply and demand brought on by the crisis in Japan
which slowed production of the Ipad 2, prompting many consumers to hunt
for a less expensive older version, even a used first generation Ipad,
but buyer beware.
"There's generally a lot of damaged ones," says Kabir. "If you actually
look down the headphone slot or the battery charge port, if you really
look close, if you see an orange dot, you definitely do not want to buy
that because it's a water damaged item."
Don't buy a used Ipad if you can't inspect it in person for damage, or knock offs. Some are circulating in California.
"To someone who doesn't know, who's not super tech savvy, they look pretty close," says Kabir.
As for Pastor Gadget, he's happy with his new and improved version he just got, but one has to wonder: for how long?
"I certainly have that conviction for sure," says Pastor Gadget, laughing.
So, how much should you pay for a used Ipad? Kabir says no more than
$300-$350. You can keep up with all of FOX17's Stacy Case's saving news
