Go Green Middle Tennessee!

WBFF Fox 45 :: Drought Double Impact on Dairy Farms- Erika Lathon
The Hatcher Family Farm has seen daily milk production drop significantly since the drought. Cows aren't eating as much in the extreme heat. The farm in College Grove Tennessee has gotten less than an inch of rain since May. Drought conditions have killed the grass that cattle would use for grazing. Forty acres of corn has also been destroyed by the heat. That corn would normally be harvested and stored for winter feed. Ponds and creeks on the property are drying up and the Hatcher's have added an additional well to supply water. Misters and fans in the barn help to cool the cows but the heat is still taking a toll. Daily milk production is down from an average of six to ten gallons per cow to between four and seven gallons per cow. Charles Hatcher says battling mother nature is nothing new but the combination of of record high temperatures, low humidity and lack of rain is making this summer especially difficult.
