Tennessee State University player arrested for aggravated assault after punching coach
NASHVILLE, Tenn.--The Tennessee State University football player who punched his coach on the sidelines during a game has been charged with aggravated assault.
According to the Metro Nashville Police affidavit, the assistant coach was giving "verbal directives to the players" when he was struck multiple times by Latrelle Allazay Lee multiple times.
The coach fell to the ground and "was dazed and somewhat unconscious from the punches," the affidavit states.
Police say Lee provided a verbal and written statement to his involvement in the incident.
At the time of the assault, the athletic department said Lee was removed from the sideline by the head coach and dismissed from the team immediately.
“We, of course, do not condone any act of violence within our department and are very disturbed by the action of one of our students," Director of Athletics Teresa Phillips said. "We are committed to supporting the coach who was personally affected and our concern now is with him.”
Lee was kicked off the team for the assault and now faces criminal charges.
TSU said it would not comment on the investigation:
"The University does not have any further comment regarding the recent developments and will assist with the investigation as needed." - Statement from TSU
