14 students arrested, 2 cited following fight at John Overton High School

Metro Police said 14 juvenile students were arrested and 2 adult students were cited following a large fight at John Overton High School.

The fight broke out Tuesday morning and prompted a lockdown at about 11 a.m., which has since been lifted.

Metro Schools said the students arrested were taken to a juvenile detention center.

Police said the fight appears to have been between male students. Metro's gang unit is investigating the fight, but it has not been determined if the fight was race or gang related.

There were no serious injuries and no one was transported to the hospital because of the fight.

Metro Schools released the following official statement regarding the fight:

"t is unfortunate such an incident occurred on the last day prior to break. Principal Dr. Jill Pittman and her team will continue to work with staff to maintain a positive and safe school environment at Overton High School when school resumes. All students involved will be disciplined appropriately.

Next week, MNPS will have counselors proactively working with students as well as with community partners to identify and understand the challenges students may be dealing with in their communities that would result in today’s issues. The district is committed to providing a safe and secure learning environment for all students through its relationship with law enforcement and its various community partners."

Metro Nashville Public Schools said several students were arrested and about a dozen or more were transported following a large fight that prompted a lockdown.

The fight broke out at John Overton High School Tuesday morning. The school was placed on lockdown at about 11 a.m. As of 12:40 p.m., the school remained on lockdown.

There's no word on the exact amount of students arrested, but Metro Schools can confirm that there were several arrests.

Metro Schools said 12 to 15 students were being transported. The schools said they were not being taken to the hospital, but are working on obtaining more information.

The arrests were made by Metro Police, which will also handle the investigation.
