Police say 'playing with a gun' resulted in Lawrenceburg teen's deadly shooting
LAWRENCEBURG, Tenn. —
Lawrenceburg Police said a 16-year-old girl was shot and killed on Tuesday night as a result of "people playing with a gun."
The LPD said Holly Collum was found lying on the porch of a home on Smith Avenue just after 8 p.m. Police found her with one gunshot wound, and she was taken to the hospital where she died later.
Lawrenceburg Police have since recovered two weapons. Kyle Daniel Welcher, 18, was charged with reckless homicide and held without bond.
Officers said Welcher originally left the scene but came back to turn himself in to authorities. Police Chief Terry Beecham called this shooting a “tragic action" that "appears to be the result of people playing with a gun.”
Collum was a student at Lawrence County High School. Grief counselors will be on hand to help students cope.
Welcher is set to appear in court on Feb. 1.
