New Nashville housing complex helps homeless man move into his first apartment

(Fox 17 News)

A North Nashville housing complex welcomed new neighbors in need of affordable housing in Metro Nashville.

Alex Smith was all smiles as he walked up the stairs to his apartment at the Paddock at Grandview in North Nashville.

"I'm almost there to quietness, relaxation,” Smith said as he approached his door.

The simple turn of a key means little to most but to Smith it’s everything. Not long ago, he was homeless.

"Skyrocketing cost of living makes it almost impossible to have your own place making minimum wage," Smith said. "You technically have to work two jobs in order to at least to put a down payment on an apartment."

That's where The Paddock at Grandview comes in. The 240-unit complex features apartments ranging from 850 to 1,185 sq. ft. that cost between $704 to $971 per month.

Units are reserved for families who make up to 60 percent of the median income in the area. For example, the cap is around $41,000 for a family of four.

Financing for the project was secured using a mix of private funding, tax credits from Tennessee Housing Development Agency and $1.7 million in Home Funds from MDHA, according to LDG Development, which built the complex.

On Tuesday, Nashville Mayor Megan Barry officially cut the ribbon on the complex.

"This is a perfect example of what we can all do together,” Barry said.

Smith said the units aren't just changing his life but also giving hope to others who may feel hopeless. Back on his patio, he remembered his nights sleeping under the stars but is thankful that those nights are over.

“I have lost a lot of great friends on these streets,” Smith said, as he looked out into the city. “But this place right here, this patio, living room, kitchen, bedroom bathroom, all this, I know they're smiling at me. I know they're proud of me,”

LDG Development said right now, The Paddock at Grandview is about 50 percent leased, and a third of the units are already occupied.
