La Vergne to honor young man for heroic actions during Tennessee church shooting

(Submitted by family)

City officials in La Vergne planned to honor a 22-year-old usher, who's been called a hero for his actions during a mass shooting inside a Tennessee church last week.

The city plans to host a special ceremony to honor Robert Caleb Engle, making October 4 Caleb Engle day for the city of La Vergne.

"Engle comes from a family with a long line of community service, and the Engle family is well known here in our city," city leaders said in a news release. "His grandmother and father both served La Vergne as city employees, and Caleb himself once called La Vergne home — the city would like to personally honor him with a proclamation that will designate October 4th as Caleb Engle Day in the city of La Vergne."

At 7 p.m. on Tuesday, the city will honor Engle during the monthly meeting inside City Hall.

At the Burnette Church of Christ in Antioch, a masked attacker armed with two guns shot seven people and killed one woman before he was subdued on Sunday Sept. 24. All victims were listed in stable condition as of Monday with most at home recovering.

Metro Police said Engle, was pistol whipped as he confronted the suspect, who then apparently shot himself during the struggle. The usher then went to his own car to retrieve his gun, returned and stood over the suspect until police arrived.

Police said the tragedy could have ended much worse if Engle hadn't stepped in to stop accused shooter Emanuel Samson.

"We can't reiterate enough on what a hero Mr. Engle was in this," MNPD Spokesperson Don Aaron said.

In his first interview with reporters on Sunday, instead of credit or glory, Engle asked for nothing more than prayers and words of comfort.

“I can tell you everyone in this church is a hero," Engle said. "God was most definitely the hero."

Immediately following the shooting, Engle posted a statement asking for prayers for the victims and shooter's family and friends. He also said he does not want to be labeled a hero.
