Metro Police said the father of a toddler who shot himself at James Cayce Homes Wednesday morning has now been charged.

Tommy Washington, 31, is charged with aggravated child neglect after his 18-month-old son used one of Washington's pistols to shoot himself in the face, police said.

Police said Washington told them he bathed his son, wrapped him in a towel and placed him on the bed near where he had placed two pistols. Police said Washington told them when he went to the bathroom to drain the tub, he heard a gunshot and found the child with a wound to the face.

Police said Washington started driving the baby to Skyline Medical Center when he started to have car problems. He stopped at Krystal at Trinity Lane and help was called.

Detectives seized two guns from the residence, a .380 pistol believed to have wounded the toddler and a .45 caliber pistol.

Police said Washington was negligent in having his guns within reach of his toddler.
